What is WordPress?

WordPress is the most common website content management system (CMS). It can be used to create business websites, eCommerce webshops, blogs, forums, social networks and much more. To give an idea of its popularity, it is used by the 30 percent of the top 10 million websites (April 2018’s data) including Facebook, LinkedIn, eBay, New York Times, CNN and Microsoft.
But what does it make it so popular as compared to other CMS?

First of all, it is completely free since it is an Open Source Project: many volunteers from all around the world are constantly maintaining and improving the WordPress software. Moreover, it runs online and you do not need to install anything on your device (yes, even iPhones and Androids phones) since WordPress is installed directly on the web hosting server. Then, it is highly flexible and largely extensible thanks to thousands of themes and plugins.

And how does it work?

At the beginning of the internet era, websites were written in programming languages like HTML, PHP and CSS in order to allow a web browser to read these codes and render them in a text, image or page layout display. This process can nowadays be skipped by people who are not confident with programming codes by using a web creator tool like WordPress. He will do that job for you. As a consequence, you will deal with an easy interface which will offer you thousands of templates to choose from. These are well-known as themes and plugins (WordPress offers more than 2600 themes and 31000 plugins available for free). They are both architectural templates allowing, for example, to change the webpage layout without altering the text content or to add a function like a navigation bar.

Do you want to create your own website? WordPress is the right answer to give your website any look you want without having to learn programming codes.

How to fix wordpress auto update fail

How to fix wordpress auto update fail

We have seen a large number of failed wordpress autoupdates in the last weeks, there seem to have been some issues with the latest 4.9.5 update. This fix is a general one for any failed auto update and it works in 99% of the cases. Most often this issue is resulting in a white screen or server 500 error.

You will need ftp access to sort this issue out.

  1. Step one is always to make sure you have a complete backup of your wordpress installation and database
  2. Take a look at your main wordpress installation folder and you will find two subfolders, wp-admin and wp-includes. This two folders contains most of wordpress code it self and nothing else. Themes, plugins etc are located in wp-content, brilliant!
  3. Download the same version of wordpress that you had installed, if you dont know have a look in your wp-admin/version.php file. All wordpress releases can be found here
  4. Once downloaded and unzipped you should now upload the complete folders wp-admin and wp-includes onto your servers wordpress folder.
  5. Once its done try to access the page, just to find out that its now working again. Login to wordpress backend and make an update to latest version in case your are not already running it.

Once you have the site up running again its important to make sure the issue was actually caused by a failed auto update, as we all know wordpress have had some security issues and for this reason you will need to check that your site is safe.

I recommend two security plugins Wordfence Security and Sucuri Security Install them and run a complete scan. This should find out if there is any issues within your wp-content folder ( since the others are now fresh )

Note: If the site still does not work after uploading the two folders, then try to upload the following files onto your main wordpress installation folder. But just make sure not to overwrite wp-config.php
